Smart Solar Strategy - Proposal to NSW Govt.

Written on the 23rd of May 2011 by Brendan Graetz

The Solar industry gives the NSW Government an alternative solution to the 60c Feed in Tariff Crisis: "The Smart Solar Strategy"

The 'Solar Energy Industries Association' (SEIA) together with the 'Australian Solar Energy Society' (ASES) and 'Do Something.net.au' have produced a document and sent it to every MP in New South Wales giving them an alternative solution for winding back the Solar Bonus Scheme.

The "Smart Solar Strategy" gives a well rounded argument/proposal, which can save them approximately $455M over the life of the scheme.

The proposed strategy covers:

  • Background to the Current Problem
  • Problems with Retrospective Laws
  • Identified Potential Savings by:
    • Using accurate solar yield data to determine actual costs,
    • Using accurate scheme data to determine costs (percentage of customers on 60c, 20c, Gross & Net metering etc.)
    • Capping scheme at 300MW as originally stated
    • Eliminating windfall profits for Electricity Retailers

In the conclusion - the document states the "Smart Solar Strategy" would save at-least $455 Million.
